Last night Sophie was playing with an original 1977 Star Wars R2-D2 Astromech Droid (Thanks Dan!) and kept holding it up to me saying:
“Daddy! Robot!”
Which of course I had to respond by saying, “No, Sophie. That is a droid. Specifically a R2-D2 Astromech Droid.”
Then the conversation went:
“Robot.”
“No. Droid.”
“Robot”
“No, Sophie. A Droid.”
“Robot!”
“Sophie, it is a droid.”
“Robot!! Robot!!”
“A Droid.”
“Robot!!!”
Finally, Anna stepped in and solved the problem by waving her hand and stating, “Sophie, that is not the droid you are looking for.”

Ya'know in all fairness, C3PO is a "droid" short for android, a robot designed to resemble a human... but R2D2? I don't know.. what human it is supposed to resemble? Mini-me? Danny Devito? Webster?
Oh, I understand what the definition of droid is in everyday use; however, in Star War canon all robots are referred to as droids. If she were holding a toy Asimo, then she would have been correct; but, since it was a R2-D2 toy, I would have been remiss as a father not to correct her on this quite embarassing mistake. Think of how horrible it would be for her if she had referred to a droid as a robot while watching Star Wars sometime in the future with friends.
Now, there is one exception when Luke refers to both R2-D2 and C-3PO as robots after he discovers that the Jawas have been attacked by Stormtroopers. However I think that was just a slip of the typewriter on George Lucuas' part; kinda like the fact that R2-D2 never felt compelled to let Luke know a certain little piece of information. I am sure Luke would have liked to know that he was kissing his sister. Maybe that is just how R2 rolls.
